Did you hear the news that Natasha Richardson refused treatment?
I just saw on the news that when she first fell, they (the people from the ski lodge) took her to the hospital where she signed a waiver refusing treatment as she was feeling good at that point. An hour later, she went back to the hospital as she had a huge headache. It was too late then, for the doctors to do anything as the damage had been done.
There is a lesson to be learned here. In the event of a fall, and you hit your head, it is better to be safe than sorry. Get a medical opinion. I also read the the people most likely to have this happen to them are young men and boys and older people.
I’m very sorry for her family. Her death is very tragic and it makes it a hundredfold worse knowing that it possibly could have been prevented.
RIP Natasha.
Edited: I just read on MSN that she signed the waiver with paramedics that came to the resort, not a hospital.
I used to work at a Primary school, and if a child had a fall or any incident involving a bump to the head it was school policy for the parent/carer of that child to be told asap by telephone. If at all possible we had to actually speak to someone to inform them, but if after trying all contact phone numbers we were only able to leave a message, then we had to fill out a letter for the child to take home. This letter would be given to the child by the teacher concerned who would be fully appraised of the situation so they could monitor the child for the rest of the day, or until a parent collected them. We also had to log all details of the incident in a report book for future reference if it should become neccessary.
As for Natasha Richardson, I am so sorry that she has died. She was in her prime of life and had everything to live for. Like many, many people who know certain sports for example are dangerous she probably never even thought of the dangers, with the common mind-set that tragedies only happen rarely and then only to other people. If lessons can be learned from her death, like safety helmets becoming mandatory for example, then maybe in time to come that may be some kind of solace for her family.
