BEST EASTERN SKIING
Best All Around Eastern Ski Resort?

Hey me and my girl are looking to go to a Ski Resort in Eastern US in Jan 09. I was wondering If anyone could help us out by saying what they would think is the best all around ski resort in the eastern us? Were okay at Skiing but were going mainly looking for something that offers alot other things to. So good nightlife, good restaurants, several types of winter activites, and good spa are really important to us. Only ski resort we have been to is Snowshoe, WV and we really liked it.

So if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it!

Overall, the skiing at Whiteface doesn’t make up for the good nightlife in Lake Placid. However, with two brewpubs in town, it is easy to quickly forget how icy the trails were or how you couldn’t ski a trail because someone was using it for race training.

Killington has the biggest variety of trails and terrain and has the night spots to boot. As one other person said, it can be pretty notorious. I’ve had a hard time making home from the Wobbly Barn or Pickle Barrel on more than one occasion. Mid January at Big-K is usually pretty good. If you can avoid MLK weekend try to do so. Otherwise it’s usually not too crowded. Mid-week at Killington that time of year can have it’s downfalls too. Certain lifts don’t always run during the week, so accessing perfectly good terrain can sometimes be a chore.

Some people opt for southern VT as well. If you stay in Manchester you can easily get to Bromley (15 minute drive) or Stratton (35 minutes) and ski both places. There are no nightclubs in Manchester, but some of the bars at Stratton are pretty good, but definitely more mellow than Killington. Plus, Manchester has tons of small stores and factory outlets as well as some kick-ass places to eat.

Most VT resorts don’t have a big apres-ski scene like western places do. In Aspen you can walk from main street to the lifts. Because of the access road to Killington, everything in that section of town is geared towards the resort. Most of the other resorts in VT don’t have a lot of clubs and resturaunts close by, except for Stowe.
